Lantern Community Services' (Lantern) mission is to champion the independence and well-being of New Yorkers who are impacted by or threatened with homelessness.  The lantern provides innovative services to help New Yorkers who are homeless, formerly homeless or have recently aged out of foster care recreate their lives. Our programs with proven results in health, employment, education, and life skills are delivered inside our residences and tailored to each person's needs.  We provide our clients, many of whom live with mental illness, addiction, disability, HIV or other chronic illnesses - with the tools they need to integrate successfully into the greater community with dignity and independence.

Objective:

The successful candidate will have prior experience working in a nonprofit organization with government funders.  S/he will have initiative, the ability to work well under pressure, a very high level of Microsoft Office proficiency (with the ability to learn new technologies and databases) and the ability to work both independently and as part of a team to complete projects in a timely manner. 

Classification:  Non-Exempt

Location:  Main Office, Midtown Manhattan

Position Type:

This is a full-time position with daytime hours.  Lantern staff may be asked to alter their work schedules depending on the operational needs of the funder. 

Essential Functions: 

The Sr. Staff Accountant for Receivables, Bank Reconciliations and General Ledger Management will have the following responsibilities:

Manage the invoicing and budget to actual reporting for an assigned portfolio, including any other necessary accounting

operations and functions.

  • Periodic reconciliation of invoices to General Ledger.
  • Carefully monitor actual vs. budgetary expenditures and prepare variance analysis.
  • Maintain electronic and paper reporting back upper organization protocol.
  • Serve as a backup for accounts payable.
  • Prepare back up for external audit requests in a timely manner
  • Perform General Ledger account and expense allocation analysis
  • Assist the controller in developing annual budgets and forecasts, including preparing all required modifications.
  • Assist in the recording of receivables in the general ledger
  • Prepare necessary journal entries.
  • Assist with processing invoices for payment.
  • Assist Controller with financial management support for various programs.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Education and Experience:

The successful candidate will have prior experience working in a nonprofit organization with government funders, and have at least 2-4 years of applicable experience. S/he will have initiative, the ability to work well under pressure, a very high level of Microsoft Office proficiency (with the ability to learn new technologies and databases) and the ability to work both independently and as part of a team to complete projects in a timely manner.   Other qualifications include: 

  • Bachelor's Degree is required.
  • Prior experience with payroll systems.
  • Prior experience with web-based general ledger software also a plus, Financial Edge in particular.
  • Moderate to advance pivot table experience required.
  • Strong Excel skills

Work Environment:  This job operates in an office environment.  There will be occasional travel to the shelter site as well as to other locations throughout New York City as needed for training or meetings.

Physical Demands:  While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, sit, stoop, climb stairs and/ or kneel.  They must also use hands to type, handle, or feel.  The employee is frequently required to talk or hear and must occasionally lift and/or move up to 5 pounds.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
