Part-time Kitchen Residential Aide


Lantern Community Services is seeking responsible Residential Aides for all shifts at a women's mental health shelter in Manhattan. The Residential Aides will provide direct services to the shelter clients and be the primary connection between the Case Management/Housing staff and the clients.  Some of the Residential Aide's work tasks will be serving meals, monitoring for safety, documenting and orienting new intakes, assisting with group activities and events, escorting to appointments and ensuring compliance with shelter rules and regulations. Successful candidates will have prior experience providing compassionate care to vulnerable populations.  

Classification:  Non -exempt  

Reports to:  Shelter Shift Supervisor

Location:  Washington Heights, New York City

Position Type:  Full-time


Essential Functions:

  • Serves meals to clients at breakfast, lunch and/or dinner as well as snacks at snack times.
  • Ensures all food and snacks served meet NYC Food Standards and be low fat, high fiber and low in sugar.
  • Ensure shelter kitchen follows cleanliness and functioning standards set by New York State and the NYC Department of Health
  • Will take and record food temperatures as required by NYC Dept. of Health
  • Will ensure kitchen equipment is functioning properly and ensure that thermometers are present in the refrigerators and freezers, and that the proper food safe temperature is maintained. 
  • Will track number of meals served and record on Meal Log Form daily. 
  • Will maintain a daily Meal Log that will include meal temperatures at delivery and service, the count of each meal served and a record of any food that has been discarded. 
  • Will ensure kitchen is always stocked with needed utensils, condiments and other food accompaniments.
  • Assist with the maintenance of food log binder in the kitchen for review by DHS as well as city and state auditors.
  • Informs shift supervisor of any issues or client concerns observed or managed in the dining room. 
  • Ensure up to date menus are hung monthly and any other meal related information is posted on the dining room bulletin boards.
  • Conducts routine inventory of kitchen equipment and supplies and reports results to the Assistant Director so she can order what is needed. 
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the Shift Supervisor or other supervisory staff.

Required Education and Experience: 

  • A High School Diploma or GED is required.
  • NYC Soup kitchen certificate required.
  • Reporting to HR of negative TB testing at hire and annually required.
  • One year experience working in a culinary capacity in a residential facility such as emergency shelter, transitional housing or supportive housing is required.
  • Good interpersonal skills; high level of maturity and reliability
  • Basic writing, math and computer skills

Preferred Experience 

  • Experience working with homeless, mentally ill, substance abuse or HIV population preferred.
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) preferred.
  • NYC Food Handlers Certificate or willingness to obtain preferred.
