Shelter Residential Aide - Security

Lantern Community Services' (Lantern) mission is to champion the independence and well-being of New Yorkers who are impacted by or threatened with homelessness.  Lantern provides innovative services to help New Yorkers who are homeless, formerly homeless or have recently aged out of foster care recreate their lives. Our programs with proven results in health, employment, education and life skills are delivered inside our programs  and tailored to each person's needs.  We provide our clients'many of whom live with mental illness, addiction, disability, HIV or other chronic illnesses'with the tools they need to integrate successfully into the greater community with dignity and independence.



Lantern Community Services is seeking responsible Residential Aides for all shifts at a women's mental health shelter in Manhattan. The Residential Aides will be responsible for security functions while also providing direct services to the shelter clients.  Some of the Residential Aide's work tasks will be monitoring for safety, documenting and orienting new intakes, ensuring compliance with shelter rules and assisting with group activities.  Successful candidates will have prior experience providing compassionate care to vulnerable populations.

Reports to:  Shift Supervisor


Location:  Washington Heights, New York City


Position Type:

This is a full-time shift position and will include some weekend hours.  Shifts times will be designated as Days (7:00am to 3:00pm), Evenings (3:00pm -11:00pm) and Overnight (11:00pm to 7:00am).   Lantern staff may be asked to adjust their work schedule depending on the operational needs of the site.



Essential Functions:


  • Fosters a nurturing, welcoming and safe environment for clients.
  • Performs hourly inspections of the facility to monitor resident safety as well as routine and random inspections of units, bed areas and lockers.
  • Reports all safety concerns, maintenance and facility problems and client behavioral issues to Shift Supervisor. 
  • Assists in ensuring fire safety including conducting of fire drills and generating documentation as required.
  • Utilizes Safe Crisis Management in working collaboratively with Shift Supervisor to respond to incidents; Completes incident documentation as required.
  • Assist in the monitoring of clients at access and to relieve contracted Security Officers as needed. 
  • Assists in the turnover of shelter beds and insures readiness for occupancy by new clients.
  • Processes new client intakes, including completion of preliminary documentation, orientation to facility, laundering of clothes, sorting of belongings, and bed assignments.
  • Secures clients' personal property and maintains an inventory of the client's belongings as needed.
  • Assists in the monitoring and development of clients' independent living skills including maintenance of bed area, laundry and personal hygiene.
  • Assists in the planning and organization of recreational activities, events and outings.
  • Informs appropriate program staff of any issues that may affect the health and safety of clients or staff.
  • Coordinates with social service staff to ensure case management, housing, medical and psychiatric follow-up by all residents. 
  • Provides clothing and personal care items and laundry card distribution to clients
  • Maintains daily log, visitor and client sign-ins, and other record keeping.
  • Assists with the completion of electronic shift summaries, daily client census & curfew violation reports
  • Attends staff meetings, case conferences, supervisory and in-service training sessions.
  • Conducts routine inventory of equipment and supplies
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the Shift Supervisor or other supervisory staff.

Required Education and Experience: 

  • A High School Diploma or GED is required.
  • F02 Certification or willingness to obtain within 1 months of employment required.
  • One year experience working in a residential facility such as emergency shelter, transitional housing or supportive housing is required.
  • Experience working with chronically homeless, mentally ill, substance abusing or HIV population is required.  
  • Good interpersonal skills; high level of maturity and reliability
  • Must be adept and comfortable with crisis intervention and willing to be trained in trauma informed methods of de-escalation such as Safe Crisis Management.
  • Basic Computer skills


Preferred Experience:


  • Experience providing security or fire safety to vulnerable populations preferred.
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) preferred.



Work Environment:  This job operates in a homeless shelter and works with a population who may experience mental illness, substance use, disability, HIV/AIDS, and other chronic illnesses.
