Job Title: Resident Advisor

Reports to: Program Director

Status: Part-time - flexibility required

FLSA Classification: Non-exempt

Job Location: Washington Heights, Manhattan


The Resident Advisor provides direct service to the young adult residents of Savanna Hall. They will assist with training in personal and independent daily living skills including cooking, cleaning, shopping, and personal hygiene. They will be present at the site for the day, evening and overnight hours to facilitate socialization and ensure safe conflict resolution. The Resident Advisors will assist with the implementation of financial literacy training and workshops and will escort the young adults to appointments related to health care and obtaining and maintaining benefits.

Essential Functions:

  • Provides hands-on support and training with independent daily living skills including planning and preparing nutritious meals, maintaining living space, shopping, banking and paying bills.
  • Supports and trains young adults in personal activities of daily living including maintaining personal hygiene and washing clothes regularly.
  • Assist with training young adults in financial literacy including assisting with money management workshops that teach about budgeting and building and maintaining credit.
  • Trains participants to care for their health including assisting with calls to providers and escorting to medical and behavioral health appointments as needed. Assists with obtaining releases and medical records for Lantern client record.
  • Support YA residents with maintaining income including providing direct support for efforts toward employment as well as maintenance of entitlements. Escorts to benefits and recertification appointments as needed.
  • Supports young adults with harm reduction and reduction of risky behavior including in the use of substances. Alerts supervisor of related events that happen in the evening or overnight.
  • Works closely with security staff to ensure a safe environment including coordinating the response and documentation of incidents.
  • Monitors client self-administration of medication and alerts supervisor when there are issues with non-compliance or misuse.
  • Conducts regular apartment visits and monitors maintenance of apartment and furniture; Assists tenants with submitting and following up on work orders.
  • Upholds tenant obligations as per Resident Agreement and Tenant Handbook, informing the supervisor of any i Supports young adults with the annual signing of the lease and obtaining income documentation.
  • Assist in leading groups and recreational activities designed to meet the needs of a young adult population.
  • Provides empathy, individualized support to program participants as needed.
  • Assist residents with conflict resolutions and alerts supervisor about any issues or safety concerns.
  • Trains participants in fire safety procedures and assists with conducting fire drills and self-preservation activities.
  • Attends training and staff meetings as assigned by supervisor and Lantern administration.
  • Documents all work according to Lantern policy and procedure.
  • Performs other duties as requested.


  • High School Diploma or equivalent; Associates Degree preferred.
  • Experience working directly with clients in the field of social service, housing or emergency shelter.
  • Must have initiative, the ability to work well under pressure, and the ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
  • Ability to document work in agency database in a timely way.
  • Good communication and organizational skills.


  • Knowledge of HIV/AIDS, mental health, substance use or chronically homeless
  • Bilingual Spanish a plus.
