Job Title: Director of Nutrition and Food Service

Reports to: Vice President for Specialty Programs and Program Evaluation

Status: Full-time, Mon - Friday

FLSA Classification: Exempt

Job Location: Office in Manhattan; Oversees and visits sites in Manhattan, Bronx, and Brooklyn


We are seeking an experienced, self-motivated, and dynamic Director of Nutrition and Food Service to oversee Lantern's food operations including meal service, food access initiatives, culinary programming, and kitchen operations for individuals who live in our supportive housing sites. Lantern strives to ensure our clients have robust food access and also the ability to prepare food in their homes as they wish and are able. The Director of Nutrition and Food Service will be responsible for developing dining and onsite food solutions that meet the needs and palettes of our clientele based on their health, taste preferences, and nutritional standards. The Food Service Director will also ensure that all Lantern kitchens and community spaces are maintained and prepared for regular food programming, be it meal service, culinary education, or special events.

  • Manage, coordinate and oversee the day to day food operations at all Lantern sites in collaboration with on-site staff
  • Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal laws regulations, safety and sanitation procedures in the kitchen and community spaces at all of Lantern's supportive housing sites
  • Ensure on-site staff have the proper certification for safe food handling
  • Develop and implement nutrition programming for the diverse array of Lantern clients at all supportive housing sites.
  • Recruit, hire, and oversee consultants responsible for culinary and horticulture programming
  • Collaborate with Lantern staff to ensure that nutrition programming is integrated into other on-site programming, and is working to achieve common outcomes.
  • Oversee Food 4 Life Instructor and Manager who runs the Food 4 Life program, a USDA Community Food Project serving young adults who have aged out of foster care
  • Oversee the food budgets including monitoring and controlling all food and food-related expenditures for 16 supportive housing sites
  • Oversee food vendors including contracts and invoicing, as well menu planning
  • Work with Program Directors and Specialty Directors to assist with planning for catered events such as meetings, groups, activities, and parties.
  • Oversee nutrition programs including Fresh Food Box, and on-site Pantry programs including ordering food and ensuring payment.
  • In conjunction with the Development Committee seek outside funding for food initiatives as necessary.
  • Maintain all required food service reporting to city, state, and federal agencies.
  • Build and maintain partnerships with other community-based organizations, to broaden food access and increase food security amongst our clients.
  • Develop and implement metrics to determine whether food service is achieving desired outcomes.
  • Participate in regular staff meetings, individual supervision, and other meetings as required.


  • A Master's degree in a related field required
  • NYC Food Handlers Certification
  • Five years experience in Food Service and three years in a management role
  • Experience serving populations impacted by substance abuse, mental illness, HIV/AIDS, and homelessness
  • Demonstrated ability to work as a collaborative team member.
  • Proactive problem solver; willing and able to seek creative solutions in the interest of clients and building a strong and respectful community.
  • Experience providing training to staff in person and via Zoom platform
  • Excellent computer skills including Word and Excel as well as the ability to enter data and run reports in our ETO/Social Solutions database
  • Ability to create and manage budgets
